Our History
Christchurch Community House (CCH) was established in 1989 as a joint project between The Canterbury Community Trust and the Christchurch City Council to provide affordable office accommodation for impact-led community groups as a way of promoting a one-stop-shop for social services in Christchurch.
Objectives of such a shared accommodation facility included creating opportunities for the tenants to share resources and work collaboratively to meet the needs of the community.
Between 1989 and 2002 CCH operated out of 187 Cashel Street and from 2002 to February 2011 operated from 4 floors (1800m2) of the former Bank of NSW building at 141 Hereford St. This Hereford Street building was owned by the TCCT.
141 Hereford Street was 'home' to 52 community organisations with a further 450 groups using its facilities and resources on a regular basis. The building was severely damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and was later demolished.
From February 2011 to September 2014 CCH moved 5 times operating from several temporary premises around Christchurch before signing an 8 year lease for 1200sqm at 301 Tuam Street (formally ChCh Star Building).
In October 2022 we moved to our current premises at 213 Lichfield Street which we very much enjoy. 213 Lichfield St is currently home to 25 not-for-profit organisations. Other not-for-profits also benefit from the shared facilities and resources offered by Christchurch Community House.
Regular users are encouraged to join CCH as a member and receive special pricing and other benefits from CCH. CCH currently has 69 member organisations and this is steadily increasing with the addition of new services and facilities CCH can offer from its new permanent site.
